Statistics for Innovation (sfi)² is leader of first Networks of Excellence (NoE)
The first projects in the Nordic Top-level Research Initiative (TFI) have been chosen. 10 projects will be funded within the first call of the sub-programme Effect studies and adaptation to climate change. The various projects shall contribute to improving our knowledge about the effects of climate change, with a focus on possible solutions to how we best can adapt to these changes in the future.
About (sfi)²'s project Statistical Approaches to Regional Climate Models for Adaptation
Uncertainty is an unavoidable aspect of climate modeling. There are uncertainties resulting from insufficient detail, from incomplete data, from numerical instability, from approximations and from measurement errors. The climate community is well aware of these uncertainties but the statistical community is not sufficiently involved this area. Increased interactions between the communities will enhance both statistical and climate science and allow for better decisions on adaptation to regional climate change effects.
The TFI Network on Statistical Approaches to Regional Climate Models for Adaptation will start building robust and lasting interactions between statistics and climate researcher communities in the Nordic countries. Five different approaches will be used to achieve this:
- Organize a series of workshops relevant to data, climate models and determination and display of uncertainty.
- Organize a Nordic Conference on Statistical Climatology in 2012.
- Organize a sequence of summer schools for climate scientists in statistics and for statisticians in climate science.
- Fund travel between nodes for doctoral students.
- Small groups of researchers will develop innovative plans of attack for focused problems.
Project leader: Professor Peter Guttorp. Co-ordinators: Professor Arnoldo Frigessi and Senior research scientist Ola Haug.
New and valuable guidelines for inclusive ICT

Norsk Regnesentral and Karde AS have jointly developed a design guide on how to make inclusive content and technical solutions for the Web.
As such, the design guide addresses a previously unmet demand of all who produce web content, such as journalists, editors, bloggers, homepage maintainers, etc. The guide is in particular meant as a means for developers and designers of technical solutions. The guidelines show in a hands-on manner how to develop and design electronic services which are accessible for individuals with a cognitive challenges. Examples for those are memory capability decline, reading and writing difficulties, and impairments concerning attention and orientation ability.
Various topics are considered, ranging from planning to development and testing. The guide comes with a number of concrete design recommendations, each including solutions and implementation examples. It can also be used for look-up purposes concerning universal design, cognition, legal matters, technical specifications, links and tools, and definitions and technical terms.

Paper with NR contributions highlighted in Nature
In volume 462-2009 of Nature, a paper with NR's Chief Research Scientist Marit Holden as co-author, was highlighted. The paper Gene Dosage, Expression, and Ontology Analysis Identifies Driver Genes in the Carcinogenesis and Chemoradioresistance of Cervical Cancer gives contributions for better understanding the processes involved in cervical cancer. The paper was published in PLoS Genetics
A large-scale survey of gene loss or gain in cervical cancer has flagged more than 50 potential genetic drivers of the disease. Heidi Lyng and her colleagues at the Norwegian Radium Hospital in Oslo screened tumours from 102 patients with cervical cancer to look for changes in gene-copy numbers and expression profiles. They found 57 candidate genes that were frequently gained or lost and which were linked to various well-known tumour-promoting processes, such as carbohydrate metabolism and avoiding cell suicide. They also discovered some novel genes tied to resistance to chemoradiotherapy.

New book about Digital Rights Management
NR's senior research scientist Habtamu Abie has written the book Distributed Digital Rights Management: Frameworks, Processes, Procedures and Algorithms
In the digital world the management and protection of digital assets and the rights associated with them from unauthorized access, use and dissemination has for a long time been a matter of concern for many rights holders, and the protection of privacy a matter of concern for many users. A distributed Digital Rights Management (DRM) system is ideally suited to providing the necessary protection and management.
This book investigates and describes a distributed DRM model, which fulfills this purpose. This analysis should be especially useful to professionals in e-Government, e-Business, e-Entertainment, e-Learning, and e-Health, to all stakeholders in the Intellectual Property (IP) value chain, content producers, owners, distributors, consumers, technology providers, etc., and to anyone who is planning to protect and manage rights in connection with any form of digital information in a free, balanced, equitable and commercially viable society.
Historisk avkastning for garanterte spareprodukter
NR har fra Finansnæringens Hovedorganisasjon (FNH) fått i oppdrag å utarbeide en uavhengig undersøkelse av historisk avkastning for såkalte sammensatte produkter i det norske markedet for et utvalg norske banker.
The Monty Hall problem at Forskningstorget i Oslo September 18 and 19
NR presented the Monty Hall problem at Forskningstorget i Oslo, September 18 and 19.
In the Monty Hall problem, a game show contestant chooses one of three doors covering two goats and one car. The game show host knows what is covered behind which door, and she opens one of the doors hiding a goat. The contestant now has to choose if he wants to open the door he has chosen, or change such that he opens the last door. By simple calculation, it can be shown that the probability of winning the car by changing door is 2/3, while the winning probability is 1/3 is he opens the door he chose first.
During the two days of Forskningstorget, 824 contestants, being 50% girls and 50% boys, tried the game show. Of these, 40% chose to change the door, while 60% stuck to the first choice. From statistics collected at the stand, it was shown that age and sex were not significant when it came to the probability of changing doors.

NR coordinates NORKLIMA project: Insuring Future Climate Change
Together with the Meteorological Institute of Norway and Gjensidige Forsikring, NR and Statistics for Innovation (sfi)2 have been granted NOK 6.5 million over the next four years from the NORKLIMA programme of the Research Council of Norway. Also, international partners like London School of Economics are involved.
Through cross-disciplinary work by statisticians, meteorologists and insurance experts, the project will study the effects of climate change on the insurance industry and adaptation to these changes. Our research will be from an applied point of view, clearly reflecting problems and challenges posed by the insurance business itself.
Projections of increased occurrence and intensity of harmful weather events in the future may amplify payouts and administrative costs for the insurance sector considerably. Not only the insurance companies themselves, but also their private and public clients, will be affected, and eventually, society as a whole must bear the costs of climate change. Knowledge of these effects will enable precautionary measures to be invoked and bring important economic opportunities.
The project fits neatly with NR's ongoing EU Marie Curie 'Climate Change and the Insurance Industry' project and is a well-timed follow-up of a two-day international conference organised in November 2008 raising similar questions.

E-voting system is off course
A Norwegian system for E-voting was tested in three counties during the 2003 regional election. Although an evaluation of the test showed that the system was well accepted by the electorate and local election officers, the Norwegian government has stopped further use of the system until a working group appointed by the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development (KRD) delivers its views on the question of whether, and in case how, electronic voting should be introduced.
In a newspaper article NR's senior research scientist Håvard Hegna argues against introducing an e-voting system like the one tested, which does not leave a paper trail. A trail in the form of paper ballots will give the voter a confirmation of her vote and the election officials the necessary means for checking the validity of the electronic voting process.

Who wins the European Football Championship?
During the European Football Championship 2004 NR will daily consider the chances of every team participating in the cup, based on a probability model. All calculations will be updated daily, and be available for the public on em.nr.no. Aftenposten will give daily comments on some of our calculations.
The probability calculations are done by simulating ("playing" on a computer) all remaining games numerous times. The remaining part of the European Championship is "played" 2000 times. From these simulations we calculate all teams chances to win the cup, to win in their group, to reach the Quarter finals etc.
