Projects
NR is a private, non-profit research organization, but with a small governmental basic funding. Research carried out depends on available funding. The result of the research projects may be reports, courses, prototypes and data programs. Our clients are the industrial sector, governmental organizations, the Research Council of Norway and the EU commission. NR has both national and international projects and small and large projects. Smaller projects are often part of a large portfolio of projects from the same or several customers. These may constitute the start of a new research area. Industry clients may be large companies, e.g. Norsk Hydro, or smaller newly founded companies. In the latter case, NR might help the company to obtain governmental or private funding of the project. One of the aims at NR is contribute to the innovation of research and technology in Norway.
Looking for new applied problems
NR is continuously looking for new applied problems within our research areas, information and communication technology and statistics. NR has a long tradition working with clients with rather different backgrounds from ours. Clients may be biologists, geologists, medical doctors, economists, and social scientists. Some clients have only minor experience within our research area, others are experts but want to work together with other experts. We want the project results to be used and visible. A sign that our clients value our work is that most projects are funded by established customers. NR participates in basic research, but our main focus is applied research.
Cooperation
NR has a close cooperation with the University of Oslo and also some other universities in Norway and abroad. Some university professors have part time positions at NR. Some projects are performed together with the universities with PhD students as a part of the project.
