Lectures on risk assessment and security of ICT systems
January 20, 2012:

NR's researchers are going to contribute to Tekna's two-day seminar on risk assessment and security of ICT systems. Åsmund Skomedal and Anders Moen Hagalisletto will talk about Long-term storage and challenges in digital forensics, security, and privacy and Security analysis of huge and complex IT systems, respectively. Successfully defended PhD thesis about VoIP
November 22, 2011:

Lars Strand successfully defended his PhD thesis with the title Advancement towards secure authentication in the Session Initiation Protocol. The work was part of the EUX2010SEC project and was carried out at the VoIP Test Lab at the Norwegian Computing Center.

Dr Wolfgang Leister (NR), dr Josef Noll (UNIK), and Torleiv Maseng (FFI) have been supervisors. The trial lecture was about the topic The development of security architectures in fixed and mobile telephone systems and was held on the same day.

Towards more secure IP-telephony

October 04, 2011: ICT researchers at NR Lars Strand and Wolfgang Leister, and Alan Duric from Telio, received a best-paper award in recognition of their work on Migration towards a more Secure Authentication in the Session Initiation Protocol presented at the SECUREWARE 2011 conference. ICT researchers at NR are active in developing methods for more secure IP telephony protocols within the EUX2010SEC project. NR has developed a test lab to evaluate IP telephony setups on the Asterisk system. This lab is available to industry partners and IP telephony customers to test a system setup before deploying it. Compendium on Open Source, Open Collaboration, and Innovation

September 08, 2011: The Internet results in new forms of communication and production in private enterprises and the public sector. A third model for innovation, the Commons-Based Peer Production (CBPP), emerges where open source, open content, open data, and open hardware are used. Incentives to participate in CBPP often go beyond financial gain. CBPP impacts licenses, collaboration, communication, quality metrics, security, law and society. Download

Assistant Research Director Dr. Wolfgang Leister (NR) and Professor Nils Christophersen from the Department of Informatics at the University of Oslo have published a compendium to a course at the master-level that examines the subject of CBPP. The compendium is written together with authors from NR, the University of Oslo, London School of Economics, and United Nations University in Maastricht. The compendium, written in English, is available under a Creative Commons license. The authors hope to get feedback from readers so that the content can be updated in a spirit of openness.

Designing Accessible Apps Tutorial at Yggdrasil 2011 Conference

June 24, 2011: DART Research Scientist, Trenton Schulz, will hold a tutorial entitled, “Accessible Apps from Design to Use” at the Yggdrasil 2011 Conference. The Yggdrasil conference is arranged by the Norwegian Computer Society and is Norway’s largest conference for user experience, user friendliness, and communication. The tutorial will include information about functionality that can increase accessibility on Android and iOS devices. The tutorial will also talk about how user evaluations with different user groups can help achieve universally designed apps.

"Smartphones for all!" seminar

March 2, 2011: NR is about to arrange a seminar about the digital inclusiveness of smartphones. The seminar's target group includes developers, project managers, stakeholders from the private and public sector, students, user organization, and all those interested in the topic. The event consists of a number of lectures that deal with the universal design of phones and smartphones and associated software, inclusive and usable apps, and mobility for all. "Inclusive identity management in new social media" seminar

March 2, 2011: The consortium members of the E-me project arrange a seminar on inclusive identity management in new social media on March 22, 2011. Among the topics of this full-day seminar are accessibility, usability, and user experience in the context of social networking services. Book chapter on Quality of Service, Adaptation, and Security Provisioning in Wireless Patient Monitoring Systems

February 4, 2011: Researchers at NR have contributed to a book chapter on Quality of Service, Adaptation, and Security Provisioning in Wireless Patient Monitoring Systems. The chapter proposes to use an adaptation of the MPEG-21 standard (ISO/IEC 21000) in resource-restricted systems such as patient monitoring systems and sensor networks.

Designing social media for all

December 21, 2010: At the edge of the new year, NR proudly announces the start of another new project called Web Citizen/Nettborger. The project's aim is to ensure that social media are universally designed and can be used by as many individuals as possible. Please see the project's factsheet for more information.

Including Visually Impaired in the Social Web

December 13, 2010: NR's ICT group is proud to announce the start of a new project called IVIS, an acronym for Including Visually Impaired in the Social Web. The project includes partners from all Nordic countries. Please see the factsheet, of IVIS for more information.

NR to host international conference on Identity Management

November 02, 2010: On Nov. 18 and 19, 2010, NR will be hosting the IDMAN 2010 conference, where international researchers will discuss the implications of identity management technologies for society, surveillance, cybercrime, privacy and computer security. Profiled keynote speakers will lecture on electronic voting, authentication technologies, usability and e-inclusion and standardization of identity management. The scientific contributions will be available as IFIP proceedings 343, Policies and Research in Identity Mangagement.

New research project in the elderly's use of smartphones
October 21, 2010: We are proud to announce that we have started a short-term project with the Norwegian IT-funk programme, RichChan, and SeniorNett for looking at a new type of smartphone that is targeted specifically at the elderly. The phone includes an innovative keypad that is helpful for people that have movement problems with their hands. NR will run user tests of the keyboard and hold focus groups with the target elderly users. Please view the factsheet of Jusphone or the IT-funk website for more information.
e-Inclusion meets Security: Two new research projects started
September 22, 2010: NR's ICT group has recently started two new long-term projects at the intersection of e-inclusion, accessibility, and universal design, combined with aspects from digital security, trust, and privacy. Please view the factsheets of e-Me and uTRUSTit for more information.

Best-paper awards keep rolling in
September 10, 2010: NR's ICT researchers Wolfgang Leister, Svetlana Boudko, and Till Halbach have been awarded with a price for best paper at the Fifth International Conference on Systems and Networks Communications.
Identity theft conference
September 9, 2010: NR is among the hosts for this year's identity theft conference named ID-tyveri 2010 in Oslo, Norway. Registration deadline is October 1.

Yet another best-paper award
April 8, 2010: DART member Till Halbach's contribution to this year's ACHI conference was selected as one of the best papers. An extended version of the paper will be published in one of the IARIA journals later this year.

Workshop on user studies and universal design in ICT
March 19, 2010: NR is to host a workshop on methods relating to user studies utilized in the design and development of ICT products and services. The emphasis will be on accessibility, universal design and usability. The workshop is held Friday May 21, 2010, at NR in Oslo. It is a satellite activity of the Unitech-2010 conference.

Key note speach at the Mobile Research Conference
February 25, 2010: DART member Ingvar Tjøstheim is one of the key note speakers at the Mobile Research Conference, held March 8-9, 2010, in London. The title of his talk is Capturing situations and context in mobile surveys. Reducing the recall and the out of context problem. He is also member of the program committee.
Design for cognitively accessible web pages
Project logo January 19, 2010: The design guide produced in the course of the KogNett project is now available at iktforalle.no. Besides the best-practices design principles for developers, the guide contains an extensive part on planning, development, and testing of technical solutions. The guide can also be used to look up background information on cognition and cognitive challenges, specifications and recommendations, technical tools, definitions worth knowing, and other literature.
DART's year terminates with best-paper award
January 05, 2010: The paper Robust, Secure, Self-Adaptive and Resilient Messaging Middleware for Business Critical Systems, by DART member Habtamu Abie and two of his collegues has been awarded the price for best paper on the ADAPTIVE-2009 conference. The research will be extended significantly in the upcoming journal article.
Book chapter on The Mobile Phone in Market Research
December 02, 2009: DART member Ingvar Tjøstheim has written the chapter The Mobile Phone in Market Research in the recently published book titled Mobile Market Research. The chapter addresses how and when to use the mobile phone for self-interviewing and data-collection emphasizing location, context, and privacy and privacy-enhancing technologies.
Seminar on universally designed web pages
Seminar flyer November 16, 2009: DART is going to host a half-day seminar on inclusive and accessible web pages. The event will take place on December 10, 2009. Findings of the research project KogNett will be presented, among other things. Please view the seminar invitation.

14th Nordic Conference on Secure IT Systems
October 22, 2009: Members of DART were part of the organizing committee for the 14th Nordic Conference on Secure IT Systems, which was arranged at NR on October 14-16, 2009. The conference's first day was dedicated to DART's Risknet project, with the topic how to improve the security of the society and the people's identity and privacy against crime and terror in the Internet age.
Contribution to special journal issue on security of wireless communication systems
October 9, 2009: DART member Habtamu Abie has contributed as guest editor to the recently published special issue on security of wireless communication systems in Academy Publisher's Journal of Networks (JNW).
Book on distributed digital rights management
October 8, 2009: The book of Habtamu Abie, member of DART, on distributed digital rights management is now available for purchase. It deals with relevant frameworks, processes, procedures and algorithms.
Presentation on location based services and tracking
September 10, 2009: Lothar Fritsch, researcher in DART, held a presentation on location based services and tracking at a seminar organized by the network Trådløs Framtid / Wireless Future. It is possible to download the presentation from their site.

September 8, 2009: There will be a class on VoIP, IP-PBX, and NR's project EUX2010Sec from September 9 through September 11, 2009. Registration is with the project manager.
High-prestige paper award
August 14, 2009: The paper "Debugging Method Names" by PhD student Einar W. Høst and senior research scientist Bjarte M. Østvold, both with DART, was presented at the 23rd European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP) this year in Genova, Italy. It received one of two best-paper awards at the conference. The work is about automatically discovering problematic method names in Java programs and proposing remedies.
Another best-paper award
July 13, 2009: Habtamu Abie from DART is co-author of na article which got a best-paper award at the third International Conference on Emerging Security Information, Systems, and Technologies (SECURWARE 2009). The paper is about topics in the GEMOM project.
Discussion of data preservation methods
July 8, 2009: DART presented results from research on data preservation in terms of emulation and virtualization on the recent MMEDIA conference in Colmar, France. The research is part of the MARIAGE project on the long-term accessibility of rich media.
Evaluation of new MiniTV technology
Mobile receiver terminal May 29, 2009: Members of DART have been contributing to the recent successful release of MiniTV in Norway. MiniTV's technology is based on DMB, an international standard suitable for broadcasting TV signals to mobile and handheld devices.
Book chapter contribution on Universal Design
May 19, 2009: DART member K. S. Fuglerud has contributed with the chapter Universal design in ICT services in the recently published book Inclusive Buildings, Products and Services ― Challenges in Universal Design, edited by Tom Vavik. Here she discusses the importance of integrating universal design activities in the development process, and she shows that multimodal interaction and universal design are fundamentally connected.
DART researchers win best-paper award for VoIP security research
April 14, 2009: Lothar Fritsch, Arne-Kristian Groven, and Lars Strand, researchers in DART, were awarded with the best-paper award for their article "A holistic approach to Open-Source VoIP security" at the ICN 2009 conference in Cancun, Mexico. The article presents results from the EUX2010Sec project on the security of voice-over-IP communication systems.
Upcoming project: Privacy-Respecting Identity Management for e-Norge
April 3, 2009: Our PETweb project got a successor, PETweb II ― Privacy-Respecting Identity Management for e-Norge, meaning that the project was awarded with full financing by the Norwegian Research Council .

Authentication as a potential barrier for users
February 23, 2009: In an article on forskning.no (in Norwegian), researchers at DART point to potential digital barriers for certain user groups concerning identification and login processes. This topic is of high actuality in the light of Norway's new discrimination act.

Norwegian Computing center provides to ENISA's report on security issues in the context of authentication using mobile devices (Mobile eID)
November 21, 2008: The European Network Security Agency (ENISA) today published its position paper "Security Issues in the Context of Authentication Using Mobile Devices (Mobile eID)"! NR's DART security researchers contributed to this security analysis and recommendations for the use of mobile devices for authentication in everyday contexts. DART researchers with best-paper award
November 6, 2008: Wolfgang Leister and Truls Fretland, both researchers in DART, were awarded with the best paper award for best paper for their contribution at the conference ICSNC 2008 in Sliema, Malta. The article presents results from the SAMPOS project.
DART present at this year's VERDIKT conference
October 29, 2008: DART participated with three contributions during the VERDIKT conference of the Norwegian Research Council, two presentations and one poster. Topics were Universal Design, Software Quality Assessment, and Voice over IP.
USB stick based operating system against digital cheating (Minnepinne mot eksamensjuks)
October 11, 2008: DART has developed a digital school exam platform based on a Linux open-source operating system, which runs from an USB stick provided by the school. Students can use their own laptops that connect to the school's wireless exam platform.

Skolene skal introdusere digital eksamen der elevene bruker sine egne bærbare datamaskiner, og mange elever kan være fristet til å jukse. Forskere ved DART har funnet løsningen i fri programvare som startes fra en minnepinne. Les hele saken på Forskning.no.

Fall 2008: The IMT4571 - IT Governance course in HiG's security management master program is taught by dr. Åsmund Skomedal and Lothar Fritsch, both with DART. The course homepage is located at Høgskolen i Gjøvik.
SAMPOS workshop at NR
October 2-3, 2008: NR hosts this year's joint workshop foreseen by the NFR projects SAMPOS and WISENET. The focus of the workshop will be on various aspects of biomedical sensor networks. The workshop's program is available from the project site.
SeSam4 project meeting
Terje Åberge from Vestlandsforskning in discussion with the management team, Bård Krogshus and Robert Engels September 11, 2008: The SeSam4 project held a project meeting in Oslo. The main issue was to decide on the Technical Annex and plans. Jøns Sjøgren from BuildingSmart gave a presentation of BuildingSmart and their relation to WP5 (The Building pilot).

September 3, 2008: DART has completed the prototype design of its new web pages.
NR receives EU-funded GEMOM project
February 1, 2008: DART has been awarded with EU funding for the GEMOM project. GEMOM main research area is resilient messaging middleware. DART will be developing security concepts in GEMOM.
