Maya calendar rendered in stone? Each starcase has 91 steps, which, added to the single step at the main entrance to the temple, amounts to 365. On each face, the central staircase divides 9 terraces into 18, the number of months in the Maya solar year. Additionally, 52, the number of stone panels on each face, is deeply symbolic, representing the number of years required for the two Maya calendar systems to align and repeat.

At near sunset on the spring and autumn equinoxes (20./21. March and 22./23. September), the head of the feathered serpent Kukulcán, which are carved into the foot of the main staircase, are joined to the carved tails at the top of the building by an undulating shadow resembling a snake's body. The full significant of the game remains unknown. On the panel, the players are shown processing from either side towards a central circle, the symbol of death. One player, just right of the centre, has been decapitated (whether it's the winning or loosing captain is up for debate). Another player holds his head and a ritual knife.
