ENVISYS

The Mediterranean is an area with extensive human activity. It represents important food resources and is at the same time used for cheap waste disposal. Lately, the environmental consciousness in the area has grown largely. Knowing that nature takes 90 years to exchange the entire water body, the ocean can be considered as an almost closed system.
 

Estimating catch-at-age of fish

School of fishIn order to set quotas for the catch of commercial fish species such as cod, complex population dynamics models have been developed. An essential input to these models is the age distribution of the fish caught every year. This is estimated from fish sampled from boats as they land their catch.

One of the greatest threats to human beings is climate change. Predictions indicate that our environmental conditions will change with increasing speed in the coming years with one of the most significant changes being a warming of the global climate. However, although there will be warming on the global scale there will be large regional variations in climate that will affect various parts of the world differently.

The overall goal of this research project is to improve both the security level and the security awareness when developing, installing, and using (open source) VoIP/PBX/multimedia solutions.

Extracting information from historical Norwegian census forms

This is part of a larger initiative to establish a historical population register for Norway.  Establishing such a database requires transcription of a large amount of historical records to be able to enter the information in the database. Where possible it is desirable to be able to automate parts of the transcription process for these documents. In this context NR has been working with image based methods to automate extraction of information from historical Norwegian census forms.

Fault Seal modeling

Fault seal parameters are used to model the fluid flow through faults. This is done by calculating a fault seal parameter based on the lithologies next to the fault. This fault seal parameter is then used to model fault zone permeability and fault transmissibility multipliers which are used in the flow simulation.

The Havana software has supported modeling of fault zone permeability both for seismic and subseismic faults since the 1990's.

FaultFacies

In this project funded by the Norwegian Research Council we have cooperated with CIPR at the University of Bergen on developing a concept for 3D modeling of the fault zone.
